ASAPS Declined Unification with ASPS

I recently came across an article published by Plastic Surgery News Extra, which included a survey that revealed a majority of the members of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) and the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), the two most prominent organizations in plastic surgery, were in favor of unifying the two organizations.

In the survey, more than 1,300 ASPS and ASAPS members responded to the following question:

Would you be in favor of bringing ASAPS and ASPS together as one organizational entity, while retaining ASAPS’ distinct identity, with a distinct membership, educational focus and leadership, but eliminating duplication of programs/initiatives between the two societies and reducing costs and member dues?

ASPS President, Gregory R.D. Evans, MD, stated that unification of the two organizations has been discussed for years and that this survey was intended to collect input on how the members from both societies felt about potentially becoming one.

Here are some of the notable results from the survey:

More than 70 percent of the respondents whose practices were entirely cosmetic surgery were in favor of unification of ASAPS and ASPS.
85 percent of the respondents whose practices were evenly divided between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery were in favor of unification of ASAPS and ASPS.
Over 80 percent of all members surveyed said they would support the merging of the two organizations.
More than 90 percent of all members who were in their first five years of practice were in favor of unification.
Close to 75 percent all ASAPS members responding to the survey were in favor of unification.

Even though the results seemed overwhelmingly in favor of merging the two organizations, ASAPS President Leo McCafferty, MD issued a letter declaring that the survey had been conducted without input from his society and that ASAPS did not endorse the survey. Although this decision by ASAPS appears inconsistent with the data that was collected from members of both societies, both groups said they would remain open to potentially becoming one organization in the future.

Whether ASAPS and ASPS ever become one unified organization or not, these societies will continue to promote excellence in the field of plastic surgery. 72% Choose Silicone Breast Implants for Breast Augmentation

One of the greatest debates in history is which breast implant is better: saline or silicone? Okay, maybe not one of the greatest, but it is an important concept when one is determining which implant to receive for their breast augmentation. While there are a series of positives and negatives for both kind of implants, studies show that ever since silicone breast implants were re-approved in 2006 by the Food and Drug Administration, they have been the more-preferred implant.

In 2006, only 19 percent of women’s implants were silicone. However, according to a Fox News report, statistics from the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (ASAPS) showed nearly 72 percent of all breast implants were made of silicone in 2010. Prior to the FDA approving silicone implants, there were many concerns that the silicone could lead to serious health complications, including autoimmune disorders. After years of testing and research, these concerns were ruled out and the FDA approved these implants for use.

Although silicone implants are now FDA-approved, it is imperative that you do your homework when deciding between saline and silicone. Research shows that about 20-50 percent of women who had silicone implants may need to have them replaced in ten years. In addition, there are still risks for certain complications with silicone implants over saline implants. Though saline implants can rupture more easily than silicone implants, the natural saline solution will be absorbed into the body with no further complications. However, when a silicone implant ruptures, this may not be as easily detected because the breast will still maintain its shape. In addition, it is important to note that all silicone implants come pre-filled, which may require a longer incision for placement.

Though risks and complications for breast implants are very rare, it is important to talk with your doctor about them. Over the years, silicone implants have improved immensely with better shape and sizing for a more natural contour. Women now have more choices when it comes to deciding the size and shape they want for their breasts.

Positive Effects of Plastic Surgery

When it comes to the topic of plastic surgery, controversy strikes. Many people believe that patients who undergo plastic surgery are putting themselves at risk for pain or other health risks, all in the name of beauty. While it is true that there are various risks and side effects with different plastic surgery procedures, researchers have found that plastic surgery can provide numerous positive psychological effects in the long run.

In March 2013, European scientists published an article in Clinical Psychological Science, A Journal for the Association for Psychological Science, regarding the psychological effects of plastic surgery. The study compared a group of 544 people who had plastic surgery with a group of 264 who were interested in plastic surgery but had not undergone any procedure.

The study followed these people for 1 year post surgery and found that those who were unhappy with a particular physical feature and underwent plastic surgery to correct that feature were more positive about their outcome 1 year after surgery than those who were unhappy with a particular physical feature and chose not to undergo plastic surgery. The results of this study revealed that those who underwent plastic surgery generally had positive psychological effects across all areas, including producing increased feelings of quality of life, life satisfaction, attractiveness, self-esteem, and well-being.

The study concluded that for people who are dissatisfied with a particular facial feature and are considering plastic surgery to improve that feature, those who undergo plastic surgery appear to benefit psychologically more than those who do not undergo plastic surgery.

Fat Grafting: Different Techniques for Different Problem Areas

Every fat grafting case (“fat transfer”) is unique, thereby requiring surgeons to create individualized approaches for their patients. According to a 2012 report from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS), this reshaping technique is at its height: “Renewed interest in techniques using the patient’s own fat for cosmetic and reconstructive plastic surgery has been noted in recent years. In these procedures, fat harvested from one part of the body is transferred to other areas- for example, fat obtained from the thighs using liposuction has been used for breast augmentation and reshaping.”

At my Miami Florida plastic surgery practice, I often perform buttocks augmentation using my signature fat transfer technique (“Highlight Liposculpting and Lipo Fat Transfer 3-D approach”). However, there are individuals who desire a more enhanced rear but do not qualify or want to undergo the fat transfer method; either they do not have enough fat on their body to use for the transfer method or desire an extreme, dramatic increase in volume. In these cases, butt implants are usually the best option. The best time to determine which type of enhancement is best for that person – fat transfer versus implants – is during the initial consultation.

Those who are interested in butt implants usually have several concerns and questions. Often, I am asked if butt implants are the same quality as breast implants. As a butt and breast augmentation specialist in Miami, I provide the prospective patient with the information they need to know in order to help them make the right decisions. Just as breast implants come in different sizes and shapes, based on the individual’s personal preference and cosmetic goals, so do butt implants. One of the misconceptions about the silicone used in butt implants is that they may burst when sitting down. “Black Madam” Proves Anyone Can Pose as a Surgeon

When will we, as a society, learn? Only a qualified plastic surgeon should perform surgery, especially when it comes to a delicate, complex procedure such as butt augmentation. Unfortunately, however, in the past few years more and more cases of illegal surgeries have popped up. In December 2009, I addressed the saddening death of Miss Argentina, the then 37-year old Solange Magnano, after undergoing a butt enhancement procedure. Although the circumstances that surrounded this event are unknown, there were reports that a liquid-type injection was used for her enhancement.

A few months ago we learned about Philadephia’s Padge Windslowe, a.k.a. “ The Black Madam.” As reported on USAtoday.com back in mid-May, Windslowe “used silicone from Thailand and Krazy Glue to perform at-home cosmetic surgery that left an exotic dancer with a plump derriere — and potentially deadly complications…” This article also reported that Philadelphia police believed Padge performed at least 14 cosmetic surgery procedures (at “pumping parties”), moving locations to avoid being caught.

There are so many dangers when going to a non-plastic surgeon for a surgical procedure. Some of these so-called doctors lie and say they are surgeons while others openly admit it. In both instances, there are individuals who still undergo surgery with these people. Either these prospective patients are unaware of that person’s background, due to their lack of research, or do not understand the risk they are putting themselves at if they decide to go to a “doctor” with a lack of experience, knowledge, and skills.

I am very passionate about providing my patients with a safe, rewarding plastic surgery experience, which is why I want everyone to understand that a board certified plastic surgeon is the best person to go to for buttock augmentation. Dr. Mendieta Talks Celebrities and Plastic Surgery on “Anderson Live”

Board certified Miami plastic surgeon Dr. Mendieta recently appeared on “Anderson Live,” a daytime talk show hosted by CNN anchorman Anderson Cooper. Sitting alongside several guests on the show, Dr. Mendieta provided his expert perspective regarding the major trend in plastic surgery these days: the desire to resemble a celebrity. Dr. Mendieta explained that it is very common for individuals to bring pictures of a celebrity they covet to their consultation. Seeing these images does not mean that he will then set out to create results that are identical to that celebrity; Dr. Mendieta simply sees it as a good starting point, allowing him and the patient to be on the same page. In other words, a celebrity image acts a good point of reference for him to clearly understand the type of shape the prospective patient desires.

A Qualified Plastic Surgeon Can Help Prevent Post-Operative Complications

When a tragic plastic surgery experience hits the news, it’s natural for a prospective patient to feel discouraged and fearful. But it must be noted that, while there are potential risks and complications associated with every surgical procedure, the probability of a post-operative problem occurring is minimal when in the hands of a qualified plastic surgeon. Unfortunately, however, not everyone who offers buttock enhancement and liposuction is qualified to do so.

An example of cosmetic-surgery-gone-wrong is the case of 50-year old Idell Frazer, who underwent liposuction on her back and fat transfer to her buttocks at Strax Rejuvenation in Lauderhill. Due to post-surgical complications, she died soon thereafter. Peter Mineo, the attorney for Strax Rejuvenation, was reported in the NBC 6 news article to say that the medical examiner ruled preliminarily that Frazer died from “adipose tissue embolus,” which was described as “a piece of fat tissue that causes an obstruction.”

According to Dr. Mendieta, a Miami liposuction and fat transfer specialist, this is an uncommon problem following the fat transfer method. With extensive experience in this specific buttock augmentation technique, the Miami plastic surgeon was discussed in the same NBC 6 news article. The writer said that NBC 6 caught up with Dr. Mendieta for a different story, reporting that he has performed 1,500 cases of butt enhancement via the fat transfer method and “ fat embolism is a very rare and serious complication, which he has yet to experience with any of his patients.”

A qualified plastic surgeon can help prevent post-operative complications by making sure that a person is an ideal candidate for a procedure.
