On September 28, 2011 ABC News “Good Morning America” I was asked about Pippa Middleton’s shape as she wore her gown at the royal wedding of her big sister, Kate, to Prince William.

I was quoted  “In that wedding gown, she created a stir,”  “People want those dimensions. She’s just gorgeous.”

In recent years, Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian have inspired many women to get a “bigger booty.” And while these two celebrities still remain muses for numerous patients seeking a larger derriere, there is a new public figure on the scene who recently made headlines at one of the biggest events in history – the Royal Wedding.

Wearing a form-fitting Alexander McQueen white gown, maid-of-honor Pippa Middleton (younger sister to now “Catherine, Duchess of Cambridge”) revealed her slim physique, as well as the “perkiness” of her buttocks. The buzz soon began in the media, and it seemed as though women rushed out to find out how their butt can look like hers! In response to the hype that quickly swarmed Pippa, I was asked to provide expert insight to why her butt is gaining such attention. As reported on various news websites, I explained: “Pippa Middleton has become the new queen of the booty! She opens the doors to those who did not know you could have a small, shapely and perky backside without the large size. Patients want to be more proportionate [with] buttocks that look natural and sexy and go with the rest of their body.” 

While Jennifer Lopez and Kim Kardashian-esque shapes still emit sexiness, the trend of being voluptuous with “junk in the trunk” is not the only reason why women show interest in a butt lift surgery. The desire to appear elegant and petite is prompting many of my patients’ interest in butt enhancement, as they are showing interest in having a more subtle shape that is proportionate to the rest of their body.

One of the benefits of buttock augmentation via fat transfer, or “fat grafting,” is that the patient is able to undergo two procedures in one setting. Liposuction is first performed on specific areas of the body that store excess fat, giving those regions a more svelte appearance. Following that, the fat taken is harvested and prepared for buttock injection, which will be done in predetermined points of insertion. Prior to surgery, I will have defined the patient’s buttock shape, learned about his/her aesthetic goals, and determined how much bigger he/she would like to go. The fat transfer technique allows for accuracy and gives me the opportunity to create an artistic piece of work. I take the whole body into consideration when enhancing the buttocks in order to provide overall proportionate, flattering, and natural-looking results. 

The “Miami Thong Lift” is one of my most recently developed signature techniques. As I continue to treat numerous patients who desire a better-contoured body with Mommy Makeover surgery, I can tell you that the most-requested, post-pregnancy procedures includes: tummy tuck surgery, butt enhancement via fat transfer (I use the fat removed from the tummy tuck for butt enhancement) and the combination of a breast lift and augmentation.

Just like all cosmetic surgery procedures, the individual must be in good health, both physically and psychologically. Because I understand the human form and the desire to look and feel as beautiful as possible, Miami Mommy Makeover patients frequently seek my assistance to help them achieve their goals. Tummy tuck surgery, butt enhancement, and the combination of a breast lift and augmentation are known to help to accomplish this.

There is a common confusion about fat deposits and liposuction. It isn’t the number of fat cells that causes an ill-contoured body shape. It is where the fat is distributed that causes a disproportionate figure. No matter how much I extract from a patient’s body, there will always be the same number of fat cells.

Therefore, in consideration to the various body types (square, V-shape, round, A-shape), my approach to liposuction is to recontour and redistribute the fat versus simply removing it. I call this “lipocontouring.” No two bodies are alike, so I use my artistic vision to help each patient achieve his or her goals. (Patient-specific techniques can be discussed during my consultations.) I will evaluate the prospective patient’s body based on that person’s health, body shape, and relative fat deposits.

Please note, however, that those who are on the heavier side and seek liposuction at my Miami practice may want to start learning about their options. Lipocontouring may not be the best solution, especially if that person has not yet attempted the traditional methods of dieting and exercise. Lipocontouring is for individuals who are already of a healthy shape; they just need that extra help for greater definition!

If a patient also opts for a tummy tuck, especially if she undergoes a “Mommy Makeover,” I typically use the extracted fat from the abdomen and transfer it to the buttocks. This special process entails slimming down one area by removing fat with liposuction or excision, before using the same fat to reshape another area. Butt enhancement via fat transfer allows no room for risks, such as infection, because the patient is using a natural substance – fat.

However, this procedure is not as simple as it sounds. All Miami butt enhancement patients are unique, and their procedure is patient-specific. Their goals, the amount of fat necessary to provide their desired shape and size, as well as the amount of fat that exists in the fat removal site are all factors that will affect the outcome of the procedure. Butt augmentation, whether with semi-silicone implants or fat, is not a casual procedure and should not be performed by just any plastic surgeon.

I have performed butt enhancement via the fat transfer method on patients from various areas of the world, including Miami, Brazil, Turkey, and Spain. Therefore, the ability to learn from and share with my colleagues from around the world allowed my experience to be beneficial in many ways.
